    AUTOMOTIVE 01
    APPLICATION
    Automotive (Airbag Crash Sensor Housing)

Remote Acceleration Sensor (RAS) is used in front and side impact crash sensing applications.  Special features include integration of Compliant Terminal Pins (solderless termination into plated thru hole in PCB).  Product  functions as  housing,  mounting bracket, and integral connector for accelerometer chip and conditioning electronics

    OUR APPROACH

MIE worked from the earliest concept sketches to prototype and ultimately developed a zero defect manufacturing
cell to produce this component.  Utilizing “Eye of the Needle” compliant technology and expertise, we were able to engineer a better solution and overcome an aggressive effort by AMP to control both sides of the connector in this safety critical connector application.  This application required we employ a variety of the material integration processes including reel to reel insert molding, and encapsulation with retractable pin technology

    MATERIALS

    • Compliant Pins:  510 Phos Bronze w/ Select Gold Plate over Nickel
    • Insert Bushings/Sleeves: Aluminum 6061 – T6
    • Molding Material:  Nylon 6, 30% glass filled

    RESULTS

    • Integral connector and housing design resulted in a combined average annual savings of over $70,000 per year over previous designs. •
    • Compliant pin integration improved PPM levels at the final assembly by eliminating the soldering process at the board PTH.
    • •Helped OEM toward achieving goal of elimination of lead from their plants which is scheduled to be “banned” in Europe
